2013 Acura NSX sedan concept coming to Detroit

The Detroit Auto Show will play host to three new Acura models, with the center ring occupied by a concept version of Acura’s next-gen supercar. Playing second and third fiddle will be the automaker’s interpretation of a compact luxury sedan, dubbed the ILX and competing in the same class as the BMW 1 Series, new Mercedes A-Class and Lexus CT200h. Power will be sent to the front wheels by either a 2.0-liter inline four or an optional hybrid drivetrain, with pricing somewhere south of $30k thanks to its Civic roots. Finally, Acura will show off a prototype version of the 2013 Acura RDX that gives current owners more of what their after, including fuel efficiency.

First Drive: 2012 Acura TL

For years, Acura approached the evolution of its vehicles with the deliberate patience of a carpenter wielding a sanding block. Rough mechanical or aesthetic edges were banished not with axe swings, but with small motions that seemed barely perceptible compared to the ranging whims of the competition.

Then the 2009 TL came along.

While the automaker had already begun to dabble with its then-new corporate shield grille, the TL took the piece and ran with it in a direction no one else was heading. Ask Acura about the thinking behind the design, and the company will say that the look was a product of the times. When the vehicle was penned, the world was preoccupied with ever larger displays of affluence, and Acura wanted a sedan that was unmistakable in every way. Unfortunately, the fourth-generation TL landed right as the housing bubble popped and the rest of the economy began circling the drain.

In order to right the TL’s wrongs for 2012, Acura has put down the chainsaw in favor of the carving knife to build an altogether more attractive vehicle that brings additional fuel economy to the table as well. Are the small changes enough for the luxury sedan to put its dreaded beak behind it?

Acura releasing something ‘unconventional’ next year?

Acura has been toying with us for some time. We’ve been waiting patiently for an NSX replacement soon after the original Japanese supercar disappeared, and while we’ve been waiting around Acura told Car and Driver that something “unconventional” is coming in the very near future. The only hint we have is the use of the word “sporty.” Unfortunately, that tag can apply to nearly anything these days, with exhibit A being the 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon.

2011 Acura RL presents slight changes to an aging package

The 2011 Acura RL continues to utilize the 3.7-liter V6 engine with 300 horsepower that powers all four wheels courtesy of the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. New to the powertrain, however, is a six-speed Sequential Sportshift automatic transmission. It’s a smooth-shifting unit that allows for the occasional sporty dash courtesy of the wheel-mounted paddles while also improving fuel economy by two miles per gallon on the highway – EPA ratings come in at 17 mpg city and 24 highway.

2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon priced from $30,960

During a product briefing today, Acura executives revealed that the 2011 TSX Sport Wagon will be priced from $30,960 (not including $860 for destination) when it goes on sale in just a few weeks. This represents a price increase of $1,350 versus the slightly refreshed 2011 TSX sedan that recently debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Next Acura NSX built on flip-flopped Honda Accord chassis?

According to Peter Lyon, Motor Trend’s correspondent abroad, Honda is still hard at work on a successor to the much-loved NSX sports car. If true, we can expect the halo car to be powered again by a six-cylinder engine, this time augmented by a hybrid powertrain. While we’d love to see a 400-horsepower, all-wheel-drive NSX hit the market in 2014, we’re not holding our collective breath… especially for one based on a backwards Accord chassis.

2010 Acura MDX – Review

Acura made several big changes to its flagship SUV for 2010. Most visibly, the MDX received a facelift to align its appearance with the rest of its siblings. Under the hood sits a new 3.7-liter engine with an upgraded six-speed automatic transmission. The steering and suspension were tweaked, and 19-inch wheels were added to its new Advance package. Lastly, Acura performed a few cosmetic enhancements inside the cabin and updated many of the electronics.

2010 Acura ZDX starts at $45,495 with plenty of kit

First Drive: 2010 Acura ZDX offers figure over function

Acura calls its all-new ZDX “a provocative luxury four-door sports coupe,” adding that it’s a “passionate getaway” vehicle designed for “a couple, their belongings, and more.” The proclamation is a twist on a pitch we’ve heard before, yet with an even narrower segment focus. While the marketplace has come to accept the stylishly squashed Mercedes-Benz CLS, Volkswagen CC and Jaguar XF into the non-sedan segment, this new niche – pioneered by the BMW X6 and accepted by consumers if only because the Bavarian delivers the goods – is still a substantial risk that could require a hard sell with pithy prose.
