Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, 600-horsepower monster

Beautiful as it is, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is widely regarded as a miserable handler. That could be chalked up to the 1990s-era Maserati platform on which it was built, but one way or another, the very thought of giving such such an archaic chassis more power to contend with could be the worst idea since New Coke. But that’s not about to stop the boffins over at Novitec.

The German tuning firm has a penchant for tuning Italy’s finest, and have this time turned their attention to the 8C Spider. Bolting on the same supercharger and intercooler as it did with the Maserati GranCabrio, Novitec has cranked output from the 4.7-liter V8 up from 450 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque stock to a certifiable 600 hp and 434 lb-ft, figures which Novitec pegs as good for a 0-62 sprint in 3.9 seconds (down from the stock model’s 4.2).

The Fiat Group has got big plans for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The Italian automaker will, first of all, be unveiling rebadged versions of existing Chrysler group products for the European market, with a Dodge rebadged as a Fiat and several Chryslers anticipated to debut with Lancia nameplates as well. But what of Alfa Romeo? According to reports, the hottest of Fiat’s core family will roll in with an all-new concept car.

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, the next Dodge Viper?

According to AutoWeek, the new Viper – expected to arrive sometime late next year as a 2012 model – looked eerily like an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione with a more Dodge-like front end. That would be a shame, since the Alfa’s styling is its biggest asset; its chassis and performance dynamics, less so. Giving the 8C – based, as it is, on age-old Maserati architecture – a new shell and calling it a Viper strikes us as all kinds of wrong. Then again, like a great many rumors in the autosphere, this could all be mere conjecture.

Alfa Romeo planning to reach 500,000 annual sales by 2014

The Alfa Romeo brand is a tough one to pin down… or perhaps it’s parent company Fiat that’s elusive, or maybe just CEO Sergio Marchionne that refuses to be a fixed target. New Alfa-Abarth-Maserati CEO Harald Wester has said that Alfa’s long-term sales target is 500,000 vehicles by 2014. That’s a mountainous 400,000-unit increase over 2009 sales, yet the route to the peak of that mountain isn’t any clearer than it was in January when Alfa wasn’t coming to the U.S., except that Alfa finally has “the right conditions, the right products and the right synergies to get there,” according to Wester.

Alfa Romeo presents MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde with new MultiAir engine for Frankfurt

The icon has been used on various high-performance Alfas throughout the company’s history, and most recently appeared on special editions of the Spider, GT and 147. Now Alfa’s brought it back again for this special MiTo. The Alfa MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde showcases the Italian automaker’s latest MultiAir engine – a 1.4-liter, 170hp version in this case – which replaces the throttle plane with electronically-controlled electrohydraulic actuators to optimizes airflow in each cylinder’s combustion chamber. Coupled with a new six-speed gearbox, the Quadrifoglio is capable of accelerating to 60 in seven seconds while returning nearly 50 miles to the gallon on the autostrada(80).

Rumor: Alfa Romeo to Build SUV Based on Jeep Grand Cherokee

Fiat appears interested in making the most of Chrysler’s paltry product dowry by using one of the Pentastar’s promising future products, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, as the basis for a new Alfa Romeo SUV. Although at this point our inside sources remain little birdies and voices telegraphed via cups on a string, the notion of an Alfa SUV makes some sense for a brand not satisfied with its current share of the European market, and with designs on returning to North America.

2010 Alfa Romeo MiTo Imola Edition to be released in Japan

We were saddened to learn that Alfa Romeo is under the impression that their cute yet handsome MiTo is too small for American consumption. But this feels like a slap in the face. Japan is getting 150 special Imola Edition MiTos, and man are they great looking. Painted in Imola Yellow, the cars also get 18-inch wheels, red brake calipers and chromed mirror caps to set them apart from regular MiTos.
