BMW’s storied history of building roadsters dates back to the original 328 of the 1930s. However, there have been gaps in the brand’s open-top lineage, including one extended stretch through the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. After a dalliance with the bizarre European market Z1, BMW finally got serious about roadsters again in the ’90s with the introduction of the Z3.

BMW heralds its X5 sport utility vehicle as a “Sport Activity Vehicle.” The tactic is designed to focus attention on the vehicle’s on-road handling and driving dynamics, but it’s also an attempt to eliminate any need for the automaker to apologize for the X5’s limited cargo space and restricted off-road capabilities. Regardless, consumers don’t seem to mind, as they’ve been snatching up the SAV since its introduction in 1999.

When BMW launched the new Z4 early this year, they made it clear that, unlike the last Z4 and the Z3 before it, there were no plans to create an M version this time around. Of course, forgoing the M nomenclature doesn’t mean that BMW won’t create a faster Z4 than what’s currently in showrooms.

We all know what the biggest problem with the BMW X6 M is, right? Not nearly enough power. Sure, 555 hp from a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is 5 hp more potent than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, making the X6 M the most powerful production SUV on earth. Still, 600 hp is the new black, so a stock X6 M just ain’t going to cut it. Thank heavens, then, for G-Power.

High performance vehicles like Porsche 911s being used for pursuit duty on Germany’s autobahn is nothing new. As such, in order order to grab the attention of Essen Motor Show attendees, the Tune It Safe! program’s annual police-liveried show car needs to go a step further. Past efforts have included rides such as a police-liveried Brabus Rocket and a TechArt-prepared Porsche 911. This year, AC Schnitzer got the call and it has unwrapped (or perhaps wrapped is the better term, given the side graphics) a police car concept based on the BMW 123d coupe.

The future of Sauber F1 looks a little more secure. After BMW’s announcement earlier this year that it would withdraw from its involvement in Formula one at the end of the 2009, the automaker has reached a deal to sell the team back to eponymous founder Peter Sauber.

Now BMW has invited us to the unveiling of the new, sixth-generation car at its design studio at the home office in Munich. The company is quick to point out that we’re among the first to ever be allowed access to the ultra-secret facilities, but perhaps BMW figures now that Herr Bangle is no longer around there’s significantly less risk of a journalist’s snarky comment leading to an all-out brawl.

BMW’s official unveiling ceremony isn’t until Monday, but a few authentic shots of the all-new “F10″ BMW 5 Series are floating around cyberspace. These three low resolution images only give us a frontal glimpse of the upcoming 5 Series sedan, apparently as it does a dress rehearsal for its big show at the beginning of the week.
