Today the wraps were officially removed from the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe. The coupe is the latest model to join the burgeoning CTS lineup, which also includes the sedan that started it all, the 556-hp CTS-V super sedan and the more recent CTS Sport Wagon.
May the best car win. So says General Motors’ Bob Lutz, and he’s willing to put his Pilotis where his mouth is… so to speak. On a conference call last month, Maximum Bob challenged any journalist to a duel with the Cadillac CTS-V, and, not surprisingly, the mantle was picked up right quick by the boys at Jalopnik.
In their pursuit of 400mph, Spectre Performance’s “Spectre Speedliner” became the world’s fastest wheel-driven, gasoline powered vehicle in a final record run of 330.7mph with an exit speed of 340mph (also becoming the world’s fastest Cadillac) on Sunday with Kenny Hoover behind the wheel.
It was three years ago that Cadillac switched to ad agency Modernista!, and one year leater it rolled out its “Life. Liberty. And the Pursuit.” campaign. In a four-sentence statement put out by Cadillac General Manager Bryan Nesbitt, the brand is looking for a new agency and Modernista! “has elected not to participate” in the search.
Now that General Motors is back from the brink, Cadillac must roll up its monogrammed sleeves to move more semiprecious metal. Toward that end, the new SRX gets the brand’s first turbo engine, the stunning CTS coupe is scheduled to arrive next year, and two new sedans bracketing today’s CTS are due in 2011. But the brightest ray of postapocalyptic hope is the CTS Sport Wagon: the first U.S.-factory-built wagon in Cadillac’s 107-year history.
In Europe, the humble station wagon holds a big-time slice of the family driver demographic, partly because ridiculous petrol prices make big SUVs and crossovers far too uneconomical. Americans, on the other hand, have a fundamental problem with the station wagon. We’re not sure if the wagon is uncool because it was our parents’ preferred family vehicle or if the aesthetics of it are just too boxy for our fashion forward culture. The only subset of the American public who has consistently called for more wagons are automotive enthusiasts, though even we seldom seem to vote for the Griswald Family Truckster with our pocketbooks.
If ever there were a car designed to test the marketing mettle of the New GM, this is it. In a sneak peek a few years back, Cadillac said the CTS Sport Wagon was designed to lead its assault on the European market, where BMW 5 Series Tourings and Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagons sell like luxury crossovers.
Last month, we sampled the 2010 Cadillac SRX in naturally aspirated, 265-horsepower guise, and after a week behind the wheel we are convinced General Motors’ luxury brand finally has a competitive crossover to take on the segment-defining Lexus RX. Along with Cadillac’s unique angular styling and a full complement of amenities, the SRX surprised us with an edgy chassis that wasn’t afraid to cut the rug when pulled onto the dance floor.
