There’s little doubt that the ATS is gunning for the 3 Series, and Cadillac is confident that its new sports sedan is a real pavement slicer. The car’s development included plenty of time on the Nurburgring, it boasts nearly 50/50 weight balance, and it features a five-link independent rear suspension, a first for the Cadillac brand. The ATS tips the scales at 3,400 pounds, slightly more than the 3,362-pound BMW 328i sedan. The ATS is also the same exact height as the Bimmer, the wheelbase is within a few tenths of an inch, and the Caddy is about one inch wider.

Power is critical in this segment, and the ATS features three engine offerings. The base model uses GM’s all-new 2.5-liter four-cylinder generating an estimated 200 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 188 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 PRM. The up-level 2.0-liter turbo four might be the most interesting choice, with 270 horses at 5,300 RPM and 260 lb-ft at just 2,400 RPM. The top engine is the familiar 3.6-liter V6, which offers 318 horsepower at 6,800 RPM and 267 pound-feet of torque at 4,900 RPM. The 3.6 and the 2.5 run on regular unleaded, while premium is recommended for the 2.0 turbo. Transmission choices include a Tremec M3L TR3160 six-speed manual and a Hydra-Matic 6L45 six-speed automatic.

Cadillac is getting ready to launch into a segment of the automotive market that’s already rife with serious competition. The upcoming Cadillac ATS will do battle with the likes of the Acura TL, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, among others. Simply put, it will need to be a very good car to gain the attention of those who shop in this segment.

The Ciel is powered by a 425-horsepower, twin-turbocharged version of GM’s 3.6-liter V6 engine with direct injection that’s augmented by a hybrid system using lithium-ion batteries. Those massive 22-inch wheels may not look that large because the Ciel itself is a big boat with a wheelbase 12 inches longer than a CTS sedan and overall length cresting 200 inches. Cadillac says the car’s shape is more natural and organic than its current design language, perhaps expressing more Art than Science with smoother lines and softer curves than we’re used to seeing. We particularly like the slightly rising chrome accent line along the rocker panels that stretches the length of the Ciel.

The new sedan is said to be riding on an extended version of General Motors’ Epsilon II platform – the same architecture that underpins the Buick Regal and LaCrosse, the next Chevrolet Malibu and the new Saab 9-5. Power is expected to come in naturally-aspirated and turbocharged V6 forms, driving either the front wheels or all four depending on specification, when it comes along likely sometime late next year as a 2013 model. A turbocharged four has also been rumored, and of course we’d love to see a high-output XTS-V.

The big news on the power front is an upgraded 3.6-liter V6 that now delivers 318 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque; up from the current mill’s 304 horses and 273 lb-ft. GM engineers were able to improve power without impacting fuel economy by developing larger intake valves, an improved port design and adding a longer-duration intake camshaft. The aluminum V6 is also an impressive 20.5-pounds lighter for 2012, thanks to a composite intake manifold, a lighter front cover and high-strength connecting rods. The 3.6′s weight-loss program aids fuel efficiency (an EPA-estimated 18 city/27 highway) while also improving weight distribution, which is never a bad thing.

Cadillac has officially announced a host of changes for the 2012 SRX crossover, including a new standard engine – General Motors’ 3.6-liter direct-injected V6. This powerplant will serve as the only available engine on the SRX here in the United States, replacing both the base 3.0-liter V6 and 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 that was axed earlier this year.

Under the hood of the 2012 SRX, the 3.6-liter mill produces 300 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque – increases of 35 hp and 37 lb-ft over the anemic 3.0-liter engine that served as the base engine when the SRX was refreshed for the 2010 model year. The new V6 offers the same amount of horsepower as the discontinued 2.8-liter turbocharged unit, though it’s down on torque by 35 lb-ft.
