Little more than ten years ago, the meat and potatoes of the automotive universe were C and D segment sedans. Think Corolla and Camry; Focus, Fusion and (old) Taurus; Civic and Accord. But then, for better or for worse, something significant shifted in that old sales paradigm. Specifically, crossovers. Also known as CUVs, the overgrown wagons still ride around on C and D platforms, only a foot higher off the ground. Why? Blame the SUV craze and/or what automakers refer to as the “command seating position,” an odd euphemism for sitting up high.

Hyundai began the first wave of media drives for the new 2010 Tucson today in California after unveiling its latest crossover at last week’s LA Auto Show. As part of the presentation before heading out, product planning chief Scott Margason announced that the completely redesigned model will have a starting tariff of $18,995 when they start rolling into showrooms in the coming days.

When the swoopy new 2011 Sonata goes into production at Hyundai’s plant in Alabama early next year, it won’t offer a V6 engine anymore, but it will get the company’s first ever direct-injected engine. This week in South Korea, Hyundai took the wraps off its 2.4-liter Theta II GDI four-cylinder. Like similar engines from other automakers, Hyundai’s engineers have taken advantage of the charge cooling effect of direct injection by boosting the compression ratio to 11.3:1. As a result the engine produces 198 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm in Korean spec.

It’s been less than a year since the Hyundai Genesis Coupe hit the streets, but the Korean automaker isn’t sitting on its hands. Just as it’s done in the past, Hyundai is launching a steady stream of refreshed and redesigned models, and even new models – like the Genesis – are benefiting from the updates.

By now, vehicles like the Genesis and Equus have convinced most of how far Hyundai’s come from bring the purveyors of punchline hatchbacks. But in case that wasn’t enough, Hyundai has dropped the bigger-than-the-average-bear Equus VL500 limousine on the home market. Still not enough? How about presidential-grade armored versions, then?

Hyundai thinks it has a new value-champ among hot imports with its new Genesis Coupe 2.0T. It’s hard to argue with 210 hp, rear-wheel drive, and sexy styling for only $22,750. But the Genesis isn’t sold in a vacuum, so we needed to see how it stacked up against some serious competition.

Hyundai has just launched a new Equus limousine in its home market designed to appeal to executives that really need extra stretch-out room. The new Equus VL500 has had 12 inches of extra length inserted in between its axles. The extra length means that the already large Equus now bests other competitors like the Lexus LS460L and Mercedes S500L by almost 15 inches in rear leg room.
