Note that the standard Veloster’s 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine produces only 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. The extra 63 horsepower afforded by the addition of a turbocharger, among other mechanical upgrades we’ll talk about later, makes the Veloster instantly competitive with other sport compacts like the Volkswagen GTI, Honda Civic Si and Mini Cooper S.

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe to get 350-hp V6

According to Car and Driver, the four- and six-cylinder engines found under the coupe’s newly designed hood are coming in for significant upgrades. The 3.8-liter Lambda V6 now uses direct-injection technology (just like in the updated 2012 Genesis sedan), but instead of matching the four-door’s 333 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque, Hyundai has further massaged this engine to the tune of 345 hp and 295 lb-ft of twist. That means the Korean coupe will put down more horsepower than many of its American and Japanese six-cylinder rivals, specifically the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Nissan 370Z.

There’s good news for turbo-four enthusiasts, as well. Hyundai’s 2.0-liter inline-four receives a new twin-scroll turbo unit and an upgraded intercooler, meaning there’s now 271 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque on tap. Both the four- and six-cylinder engines are now available with eight-speed automatic transmissions, but those who prefer to row their own gears will almost certainly still be able to opt for a six-speed manual gearbox with either engine. Turbocharged Hyundai Veloster to bow at SEMA

The folks over at ARK Performance were thinking the same thing, and are set to debut a custom Veloster at SEMA in November with an extra dose of oomph under the hood. The additional ponies – 210 in total – comes courtesy of intercooled turbocharger system and a high-flow exhaust system. ARK has also worked over the rest of the Veloster with six-piston front brakes, coilover suspension system, custom Alcantara interior and a widebody kit with green and grey graphics.

Hyundai Veloster priced from $17,300

Hyundai has released full pricing/specifications on the 2,582-pound 2012 Veloster. Pricing is $17,300 plus $760 for destination charges. Major options include the paddleshift dual-clutch gearbox at $1,250; Style package with 18-inch alloys, panoramic roof, premium audio and leatherette ($2,000); and Tech Package with unique 18-inch alloys, navigation with rearview camera, proximity key and pushbutton start ($2,000 and requires Style pack). Quoted fuel economy figures are 28/40/32 mpg with the six-speed manual and 29/38/32 with the dual-clutch. Deliveries commence in September.

Now, the Dutch are known for their open-mindedness, so you’d have to figure anything they’d censor off their airwaves would have to be pretty bad. Right? Well, sorta. It’s a little morbid, the spot that revolves around the Angel of Death and the benefits of not having a street-side passenger door. Never mind the fact that actually promoting the lack of a certain feature on a car – in this case, on the Hyundai Veloster – as a safety measure is a rather dubious claim in the first place.

It’s been a busy two years in the subcompact world. Newcomers like the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 have made it clear they intend to give models like the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris and segment volume leader Nissan Versa a run for their small-displacement money. Even General Motors is getting into the fray with the upcoming 2012 Chevrolet Sonic after years of trying to pass off the Aveo as legitimate transportation. So when Hyundai announced it was taking the knife to its Accent, we knew to expect good things.

The Korean automaker hasn’t been one to mess around lately, and vehicles like the all-new Elantra and redesigned Sonata have helped push the manufacturer to the highest market share in the company’s history – 5.6 percent in May. With the segment’s first direct-injection four-cylinder engine, the buyer’s choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, an impossibly low MSRP and 40 mpg highway from every model, it’s clear that the 2012 Hyundai Accent is intent on eclipsing the competition.

Hyundai boosting output in hopes of 600,000 U.S. sales in 2011

Hyundai is making a serious sales push in 2011. Last year, the automaker delivered 538,228 new vehicles to buyers in the United States, but Hyundai’s New Year’s resolution was apparently to make a run at the 600,000 mark. To accomplish this feat, Hyundai will boost production at its Alabama and South Korean assembly facilities. Workers are putting in overtime hours and even coming in on Saturdays to make sure supply can keep up with demand for the automaker’s fresh lineup.

Review: 2012 Hyundai Veloster

While the experience falls seriously short of taking a few orbits in the Space Shuttle, those seven words were enticing enough to motivate us to cross the dreaded Los Angeles basin during rainy rush-hour traffic last week. The Veloster is Hyundai’s latest addition to a rapidly expanding lineup that now encompasses everything from the modest $12,000 Accent to the Lexus-fighting $58,000 Equus. The new hatchback – uniquely configured with one driver door and two passenger doors – is parked on the low end of the model range, promoted as a compact coupe offering fun-to-drive chassis dynamics, a long list of standard innovative technology and hybrid-beating fuel economy in one cool-looking package.

Hyundai isn’t letting anyone drive the Veloster yet, but like proud parents, they are more than willing to show us around the car, from top to bottom, and take us for an extensive drive around the block – as passengers.

2012 Hyundai Genesis priced from $34,200

That $34,200 price point corresponds to the base Genesis 3.8 sedan, which now uses a direct-injected 3.8-liter V6, rated at 333 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque – gains of 43 and 27, respectively, versus the 2011 model. A new eight-speed automatic transmission is also on tap, meaning the Genesis 3.8 will achieve up to 29 miles per gallon on the highway.

Moving up in the range, the Genesis 4.6 – $44,500 – also gets an eight-speed automatic transmission, though its V8 engine remains largely unchanged. Power ratings carry over from 2011 – 385 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque.

Debut of the Hyundai i40 in Barcelona

Hyundai has released a glimpse of its upcoming i40 sedan ahead of the sedan’s May 12 debut at the Barcelona Motor Show. The i40 represents the latest Hyundai to be released under the company’s new “New thinking. New possibilities” ad slogan, along with its “fluidic sculpture” design language. According to Hyundai, the design brief uses shapes found in nature to make vehicles with a distinct flowing shape. To our eyes, we see a subtle evolution of the styling that made the Elantra so popular, and there’s a little Lexus IS thrown in there for good measure.
