We’ve been driving it south of Edinburgh on fast and flowing roads, and up, over and through an awe-inspiring off-road course.
Like the Range Rover and Discovery 4, the Range Rover Sport has been given such a substantial overhaul it’s almost a new model.
Its slightly fussy looks have been smoothed out and simplified, making it a more satisfying car to stare at than before and there is a new 3-litre TDV6 diesel and 5-litre supercharged petrol V8 with an insane 503bhp.

Like its similarly named and styled big brother, the Range Rover Sport receives two new engines and a number of chassis, interior, and exterior changes for 2010. Despite the many updates, the Range Rover Sport is still very much the same SUV that it was before, remaining on the same body-on-frame platform as the Land Rover LR4, previously known as the LR3. As a result, it is seriously heavy at about 5800 pounds, a level of mass seldom associated with anything resembling sportiness. But it’s that significant weight that makes the Sport that much more impressive, at least in supercharged form.

The Gillies household rarely disagrees about vehicles. I will tend to talk more about the finer details of the handling, brakes, and power delivery than Jane and the twins, but we can usually agree whether a car’s good, bad, or indifferent. The only exceptions are that Emma likes everything that has a Mercedes-Benz badge on it, while Cameron thinks that the Bugatti Veyron is the greatest car in the world, because the BBC’s Top Gear team says it is and won’t listen to Dad’s protestations about it being an overpriced, over-engineered travesty. But then he’s never driven a McLaren F1, so he doesn’t really know.
