2012 Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe revealed
Then, we got our first glimpse at the newest Black Series hotness during our recent drive day in southern France with the 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG lineup. It’s the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series – the most powerful Vitamin C ever from Stuttgart and Affalterbach – that will do all it can to make us forget about our holy experiences in the BMW M3 GTS and Audi Quattro concept.

The Black Series sits lower than the standard C63 AMG and gets nicely widened tracks – an additional 1.6 inches in front, 3.1 inches rear – due primarily to the special 9.0-by-19-inch front and 9.5-by-19-inch rear AMG forged wheels. Shift mapping with the AMG Speedshift MCT sport auto seven-speed has been modified, meaning gear changes in Sport+ and Manual modes take just one tenth of a second. The steering rate has also been tightened up versus than the stock C-Class AMG cars.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Those are apparently words to live by for Mercedes-Benz – the automaker has released a slew of information on its updated 2012 M-Class, yet the starting price remains the same as the sticker on the 2011 version. The U.S.-built luxury SUV is ready to give more, without charging for it.

Initially offered in two flavors, the gas-sipping ML 350 has a starting MSRP of $49,865 and the diesel-drinking BlueTec ML 350 will cost you $51,365 (*including destination). Both versions of the 2012 M-Class get a new front-end that features the familiar three-pointed star, an encroaching chrome “skid plate” and a set of LED daytime running lights.

Under the hood, each M-Class features an updated power source. The ML 350 is motivate by a new 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 engine, which produces 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Also new is the seven-speed automatic transmission to which the motor pairs. If you prefer diesel to traditional gasoline, the ML 350 BlueTec boasts a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that’s rated at 240 horses and an impressive 455 lb-ft of torque. Both M-Class variants come standard with 4Matic all-wheel-drive.

Some folks say there’s no replacement for displacement. We’ll agree that there’s nothing quite like the roar of a big ol’ naturally aspirated V8, but in modern times (and with new fuel efficiency laws taking hold), turbocharging points the way forward.

Nearly every automaker on the planet is scrambling to create turbocharged alternatives to larger-displacement engines, and over the past few years, not offering some sort of forced-induction mill has become quite the automotive faux pas.

Mercedes-Benz recently introduced a pair of twin-turbo V8s in its refreshed 2011 CL-Class, and while our lead feet immediately sprinted towards the bombastic CL63 AMG with its 5.5-liter hand-built heart, there’s a lot to be said about the base CL550′s all-new 4.6-liter setup. The once-sedate CL550 just got a massive flame lit under its tail, and the end result is a grand coupe that has more personality than ever before.

The Mercedes-Benz CL is a classically beautiful car. Jaguar may have nailed modern beauty with its XK, but the CL teems with gracious elegance – think of Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara descending a staircase in Gone With The Wind. Mercedes’ designers have created a big coupe that truly has an “I have arrived” presence, and from all angles, the car is stunning to behold. We like the base CL550 because, while the CL63 AMG has plenty of aggressive design elements to its front fascia, the 550 focuses more on pure beauty of form while still looking powerful.
