The Infiniti M Hybrid, meanwhile, is good for 360 horsepower from a 3.5-liter V6 engine and a potent electric motor. Infiniti hasn’t outright said how quickly the M Hybrid can do the 0-60 mph dash, but we can say from experience that the vehicle is no pushover. All told, the M Hybrid can deliver up to 32 mpg highway, but is it quicker than the Porsche?

Buried in the tail is a 3.8-liter flat-six engine that produces 400 horsepower, and can be paired with either a PDK or the new seven-speed manual gearbox. A 911 Carrera S equipped with the auto-shifting unit can run from 0-62 miles per hour in just 4.3 seconds. If you opt for the Sport Plus package, that time drops to just 4.1 seconds. Seeing as this is a Porsche, the Sport Plus package is just one of many things you will be opting for.

Are you in the market for the latest 911? You’ll need at least $96,400 to put a Carrera S in your driveway. That’s $13,771.43 per gear.

The Porsche marketing machine calls the new manual “puristic,” which, given the company’s enthusiasm for the PDK, we assume to mean “dated.” We’re fine with that, though. We’re not whipping the car around Le Mans, so Porsche can keep the faster-than-human shifts of the double-clutch box. We want our third pedal.

What’s the world’s most practical supercar? We’re sure some Corvette and GT-R fanatics would answer otherwise, but we’re going to go with the Porsche 911, in one of its many fantastic iterations. Narrowing it down a little further, we’ll go with the 911 Turbo coupe, which offers at least vestigial rear seats, all-wheel drive and several hundred horsepower, all lined in a sumptuously luxurious leather-clad cabin.

Silly Porsche, rivers are for boats. As the story goes, this particular Swiss Porsche owner had to learn that the hard way when his 911 Turbo was driven by a friend off a boat dock leading to the Rhine River. We assume this “friend” will forever be mentioned at cocktail parties in stories that start with “You won’t believe…” and end with “… so I jump-kicked him in the throat, and that’s why we’re not friends anymore.”

The first model of any new generation of 911 is always the base Carrera, and so it is with the new 991 model. The biggest change is to the length, growing nearly four inches in wheelbase over the model it replaces yet hunkering down a bit lower. The side mirrors have also moved from the bottom-front corner of the side window frames to the top of the door itself. Otherwise, the lighter and more aerodynamic aluminum and steel body looks, well… like a 911. And that’s the way Porsche (and, judging from its sales over the past 48 years of production, its customers) like it.

Though the derivatives promise to come, as they always do, in droves, the new 911 is being initially launched in Carrera and Carrera S trims, packing a 3.4-liter flat six with 350 horsepower and a 3.8-liter unit with 400 hp, respectively.

The latest 911 will be available at U.S. dealerships starting in February 2012 with a base MSRP of $82,100 for the Carrera and $96,400 for the Carrera S, plus destination charges and before dipping into what will doubtlessly be an extensive list of options.

An astute Porschephile noticed a 2012 Porsche 911 at a gas station in Stuttgart and went to work. Following the brown coupe through the pumps then out to the street, he captured the sight and sounds of the car codenamed 991 from just about every angle before it roared off.

For 2011, Porsche has fitted its entry-level Panamera with a new direct-injection 3.6-liter V6 built in-house. Based on the same architecture as the meaty V8 used in the Panamera S, the engine cranks out 300 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 3,750 rpm. The power is more than enough to hustle the Panamera with authority, even given the vehicle’s 3,880-pound curb weight. And according to the EPA, the six-cylinder should be good for 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. I managed around 20 mpg combined, thanks in part to an optional seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with automatic start/stop system.
