China has recorded the lowest birth rate for the first time in the last 70 years. Despite changing the controversial policy of one child, there does not appear to be an improvement in the birth rate.

It is expected to have a direct impact on China’s economy and a serious situation may arise in the coming time.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the birth rate in 2019 was 10.48 per one thousand, which is the lowest since 1949.

In 2019, 1 crore 46 lakh 50 thousand children were born, which was 5 lakh 80 thousand less than before.

China’s birth rate has been declining for the last several years. This has created a challenge for the country with the world’s second-largest economy.

Actually, China’s birth rate is declining, but the death rate is also low there. Due to this, the population is continuously increasing. It increased from 1.39 billion to 1.4 billion in the year 2019.

These conditions have increased the concerns of China as it will reduce the number of working youth there and will also bring the responsibility of old people retiring in the country.

Even behind America

China’s birth rate is less than in the US. According to the latest data, the birth rate in America was 12 per thousand people in 2017.

The birth rate in England and Wales in 2019 was 11.6 while in Scotland it was 9. The birth rate in Northern Ireland in 2018 was 12.1.

In this case, the situation of China is better than Japan because the birth rate there is only 8. How low this rate is, it can be estimated by comparing it with the global birth rate. According to the World Bank, the global birth rate in 2017 was 18.65.

Why such a situation?

In 1979, the Chinese government implemented a child policy across the country. With this, she wanted to curb the country’s population.

There was a provision to punish those who violated this policy. The offending families were fined, their jobs were taken away and many times forced to undergo abortions.

But this policy was held responsible for gender imbalance. According to the 2019 figures, the number of men still out there is almost three crores more than women.

In 2015, the government ended the policy of one child and the couples were allowed to have two children. Immediately after this reform, the birth rate increased for two years but the country’s falling birth rate could not be handled.

Experts say this happened because other necessary changes were not made with the policy waiver, which could include financial support for child care and holidays for father.

He says that most people are not in a position to bear more than one child.
